If I’m being honest there really isn’t too many things better than a nice comforting meatball dinner, until of course you’ve had these Calabrian Chili Meatballs for dinner. Two words: GAME CHANGER.

If you are like me, you might be finding yourself wondering- What are Calabrian Chilis?! I kept hearing about them on Food Network, social network, and saw them popping up in specialty markets. They are smoky, fruity, with not too much heat and are a great addition to most Italian recipes. For this Calabrian Chili Meatball Recipe, I used a Calabrian Chili Paste and added it right into the sauce. Result? Chef’s Kiss Friends! This recipe is great for a weeknight or a cozy weekend with a glass of red wine!

These Calabrian Chili Meatballs are anything but boring meatballs! Spiced up and perfect for your next cozy night in.

Ingredients

  • Meatballs:
  • 1 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 lb Ground Beef
  • 1 lb Ground Pork
  • 3/4 cup Bread Crumbs
  • 3/4 cup Milk
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1/2 Onion, diced
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 tbsp Oregano
  • 2 tbsp Salt
  • 2 tsp Pepper
  • Sauce:
  • 1/2 Onion
  • 1 clove of Garlic, minced
  • 28-oz Crushed Tomatoes
  • 14-oz Diced Tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • 2 tbsp Tomato Paste
  • 1/4 cup Calabrian Chili paste
  • 1/3 cup Chicken Stock
  • 1 tbsp Oregano
  • 8 Oz Fresh Mozzeralla, slices
  • Optional: Serve with Crusty Loaf
  • Chopped Parsley and Fresh Basil

Instructions

Preheat Oven to 400 Degrees

Add Meatball ingredients to a bowl and mix by hand. Be careful not to overwork meatballs, it will make them dense. Using large cookie scoop, scoop mixed meatball and roll into balls. Set aside on plate

In a large oven-safe skillet heat 1 tbsp olive oil until hot. Sear meatballs on 2 sides and pull out onto plate.

In oven-safe skillet, add in a tsp of olive oil, chopped onion, and minced garlic. Cook while stirring until translucent and fragrant. Add in tomato paste and chili paste. Stir in garlic and onion while cooking. Allow to cook for 1-2 minutes while stirring. Add in chicken stock, oregano, and stir until simmering. Add in crushed tomatoes and diced tomatoes and stir together. Using tongs add meatballs into tomato sauce.

Pop into preheated oven and cook for 25-35 minutes. Add sliced mozzarella to top and bake until cheese is melted.

Remove from oven and top with chopped parsley and basil.

Serve with a nice fresh crusty loaf.
