I Can’t Believe I Have Never Posted a Seasonal List of Fresh Fuits and Vegetables!

Well have no fear, The Seasonal Junkie is here!! After all, seasonal, happens to be the premise of my blog (insert emoji girl shrugging).

With all of us deep in the full swing of summer, let’s talk about summer fruits and vegetables. So we can have the awesome knowledge of what’s in season now!

First and Foremost, on the Summer Fruits and Vegetables is my Fav: Tomatoes

Friends, put down the pasta sauce in a jar. Okay, in the spirit of trying to save time on a Wednesday night, you can pick it back up, But how amazing would it be to spend a Saturday afternoon whipping up a batch of your very own tomato sauce?! You can make an extra large batch, can it, freeze it, preserve it in some way and wa-la. You have the most flavorful pasta sauce to use for weeks on end. If the thought of making your own pasta sauce isn’t your jam, check out my less intensive heirloom tomato salad. Packed with all the summer flavor!

An Obvious Subject: Summer Squash

It literally has the word “summer” in the name. I feel like people often forget about cooking with summer squash. So I’m here to give it a spotlight. Seasoned with some herbs, salt, and pepper all of the sudden this side dish is looking like a main star. This yellow baby is a power-house packed in nutrients and needs to be on your dinner table yesterday, and possibly tomorrow. Check out this great summer squash recipe from Mel’s Kitchen Cafe. You’re welcome!

Beautiful, Beautiful Blueberries or as I Call Them Bluebies.

As a life eating hack, cuz that’s a thing…. the more colorful and beautiful a fruit/veggie is, typically the more great qualities they give you. Blueberries are packed with phytonutrients and have amazing anti-cancer properties. So keep these flavor bombs in the freezer for a healthy summer treat, make a sauce (great for chicken or pork), or personally I have these grain-free blueberry pancakes on repeat. ALL. SUMMER. LONG.

Next on My Summer Fruits and Vegetables is Such a Summer Staple: Melons.

With so many melons to pick from, no wonder they would be on my favorite seasonal fruits and vegetables list. Most people are familiar with the 3 major players: honey dew, watermelon, and cantaloupe. But did you know there are so many others? Sugar baby, moon and stars, crenshaw, santa claus. I know, I know, it sounds like something that I made up or . But, it’s not! Sprouts or a specialty grocery is bound to have some fun varieties. So try out a new one! I love melons for a fruit salad or to mix into my favorite cocktails…. Did I hear someone say watermelon margarita?

Lastly on My Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables List is Tomatillos!

Like any well represented Southwestern girl, I love a good salsa verde. The reason? Roasted tomatillos, of course! If you’ve never heard of a tomatillo, unsurprisingly, it looks like a little green tomato. But surprisingly, tomatillos are actually related to gooseberries. They are tart, juicy, and fruity. My favorite way to use tomatillos is in chilequiles verde, check out this recipe for a good roasted salsa verde!
