Want to bring a romantic dinner vibe at home?! Surf and Turf for Two!
Adding on to my Valentine’s day date night recipe series isn’t a recipe that is new. But my goodness is it necessary. Surf and Turf for Two. You’re welcome. Honestly, anytime I go to a steak house and have a nice meal- surf and turf is my go to. The good news? We are going to do it at home and save at least $50 and avoid all the madness of Valentine’s Day in the restaurant biz.
Surf and Turf is your choice of steak with a choice of seafood. A few years back, I worked at an upscale seafood restaurant and the options were endless with how you wanted to present your surf and turf. For you, this means a world of customization based on your liking.
What should I use as my Surf?
Traditionally you will see most restaurants using lobster. But the fun doesn’t end there friends! I LOVE scallops personally, but some other options include shrimp, crab, or crab cakes.
What should I use as my Turf?
Any cut of meat you enjoy as a steak is fair game for your turf option. In this recipe, I used filet mignon, but other options include T-bone, strip steak, skirt steak, sirloin, or flank. I love cooking mine medium rare for the ultimate restaurant experience.
But what about the sauce?!
My Valentine’s day surf and turf for two featured a chopped poblano chimichurri and man, was it gooood! Some other sauces that would be amazing with your surf and turf would be a creamy garlic sauce, a red wine sauce, a béarnaise sauce, or just simply an herby compound butter would do wonders here! Get creative friends!
What kind of sides should I use for my Surf and Surf for two?
Honestly it’s hard to go wrong here. I kept it light and blanched some broccolini and then finished it with some butter, garlic, salt and pepper. But roasted potatoes, risotto, a salad, or any roasted veg will work!
Well friends, let’s keep this short because y’all have some cooking to do!

- Salt and Pepper
- 2 tbsp Butter
- Chimichurri:
- 1/3 cup Packed Cilantro
- 1/3 cup Packed Parsley
- 5 Mint Leaves
- 1 tsp Dried Oregano
- 1/4 Poblano, minced
- 3 cloves of Garlic, minced
- 1/2 tsp Red Pepper Flakes
- 2 tbsp Red Wine Vinegar
- 1 tbsp Honey
- 1 tsp Course Salt
- 1/2 cup Olive Oil
- Broccolini:
- 8 oz Broccolini
- 1 tbsp Butter
- 2 cloves of Garlic, minced
- Salt and Pepper
Instructions
Chimichurri:
Finely chop parsley, cilantro, and mint. Add chopped herbs and the rest of chimichurri ingredients to a bowl and mix together with a spoon. Let sit for at least 30 minutes. It becomes more infused as it sits. Feel free to allow to sit overnight!
*If you are using broccolini like me as a side please blanch and set aside before starting your surf and turf. You can finish it in the pan after the protein is done and resting.
Surf and Turf:
You are going to be cooking steak and scallop simultaneously. Don't worry, it's easy! Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Pat scallops dry. Patting them dry allows them to sear properly. Season with Salt and Pepper. Season steak choices with salt and pepper. You are going to sear your steaks first. Get an oven safe skillet and melt 1 tbsp of butter on medium-high heat. Once hot place seasoned steak in skillet for 2 two minutes undisturbed, flip and repeat. Once seared on both sides, pop it into the preheated oven. To serve rare set a timer for 4-5 minutes, med-rare 5, or medium 5-7 minutes. When done set aside to rest until you are ready to eat. While your steak is cooking get a saute pan hot with 1 tbsp butter and add your seasoned scallops. Cook to brown on one side 1-2 minutes and flip to cook for an additional minute. Turn off heat and remove from heat source. Serve with whatever side you would like you be like me and use broccolini!
Broccolini:
Fill at mixing bowl with ice and water. Set aside. Get a pot of salted water and bring to a boil over medium heat, dump broccoli and cook until bright green, 2 minutes. Remove and immerse into iced water for 2 minutes. Remove and set aside. When your steak and scallops are done, add to a skillet with butter, minced garlic, salt and pepper and cook for about 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and serve with surf and turf!
Serve Surf and Turf with Veggies and Chimichurri!
